A recent study has revealed that businesses are being persuaded to adopt environmentally-friendly IT policies because to do so could save them money.

The survey by IDC asked 1,500 businesses in ten countries about green IT measures and found that energy efficiency was the main priority for 74 per cent of respondents in Europe.

Japan emerged as a leader in green technology with eco-friendly steps having been implemented by businesses and IT professionals much earlier than the rest of the world.

In the current economic crisis companies are doing all they can to cut costs and reducing energy use seems an attractive option.

Vernon Turner, senior vice president, Enterprise Infrastructure, Consumer, and Telecom Research at IDC, commented: "The cost savings associated with reducing power consumption is definitely capturing the attention of IT decision makers around the world. Buyers understand that energy efficient, recyclable products do contribute to lowering operating costs."

Verdiem made free software available in the UK to help PC users cut the amount of energy used by their computer.
