IT professionals encouraged to sign up to energy efficiency code of conduct

20:00 19th November 2008

A European code of conduct instructing IT centres on ways in which they may be able to reduce their carbon emissions has been published today (November 19th).

The British Computer Society (BCS) welcomed the move and stated that it showed the IT industry was doing its bit to combat climate change and environmental catastrophe.

Energy and climate change minister Lord Hunt endorsed the scheme, saying that energy efficiency was good for business and would help businesses save money in the long term.

Bob Harvey, chair of the BCS carbon footprint group, commented: "The BCS believes that it is important to develop an effective understanding of IT energy use and the development of best practice to improve efficiency."

He added that professionals within the IT sector were in the process of implementing best practice systems to ensure that their carbon emissions were reduced where possible.

According to a study by Opus Energy, workers are 36 per cent more likely to waste energy at work than at home.ADNFCR-1667-ID-18885029-ADNFCR
