IT leaders ignore disaster recovery

IT leaders are shunning disaster recovery systems, according to a new report by security giant Symantec.

The group revealed that the number of C-level executives involved in disaster recovery planning in 2008 has decreased significantly since last year.

In its survey, Symantec discovered that the number of disaster recovery committees which included the chief information officer, the chief technology officer or an IT director has dropped from 55 per cent to 33 per cent.

Mark Blowers, analyst at Butler Group, argued that senior IT management should be involved in these processes.

"IT is critical to most businesses because if IT is not there the business isn't running. However, disaster recovery is wider than information operation technology - it's not just about the systems being in place but people and processes too. "

In August, the recruitment firm Harvey Nash said that IT professionals are invaluable during a financial downturn if they understand how technology supports business.
