Businesses and the IT industry need to be aware that Microsoft's offer of free security software may not be sufficient for all organisations, it has been claimed.
While the introduction of free security packages from Microsoft could significantly change the IT industry by increasing the number of people using the latest security and could also create greater competition within the marketplace, there are concerns that the level of software being offered by the IT giant will not be enough for many businesses.
Panda Security has warned that small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) using free IT security solutions will not have the expertise needed to fix any damage caused by viruses or hackers, meaning that existing security services offered by people in IT careers will still be important.
Luis Corrons, technical director at Panda Security, said that while free security software offers "reasonable levels" of protection, if they fall victim to an attack it "will not offer the technical support most SMBs will need to recover".
British SMBs are the lowest spenders on IT security worldwide, with 98 per cent of companies spending less than £1,000 per annum on security solutions, according to an international survey of more than 7,500 SMBs conducted on behalf of Panda.
