The global recovery will be led by small businesses in the IT industry, according to one expert.
IT industry giant Microsoft believes that small businesses supported by the technology firm will help tackle unemployment and get the economy moving in a positive direction once again following the economic downturn of 2009.
Stephen Uden, head of skills and economic affairs at Microsoft, said current trends "all point to the importance of local small and medium-sized companies in helping us to recover and then grow in a sustainable fashion".
He explained "demand for IT innovations" means the majority of new technology businesses predicted to form between now and 2013 are likely to be "small and locally owned organisations".
According to a recent study carried out by IT research firm International Data Corporation on behalf of Microsoft, the IT industry will create 5.8 million new jobs and more than 75,000 new businesses worldwide over the next four years.
