Developments in the IT industry have allowed for Apple's iPod touch to pose a threat to Nintendo and Sony in the portable gaming market this Christmas, according to Will Findlater, editor of Stuff magazine.
"The new iPod range has been very strong. The iPod Touch has pretty much all of the functionality of the iPhone, but is far more affordable. So whereas in the past you would have had Nintendo and PlayStation being the big portable gaming hits, I think that the iPod touch will step into that role," he said.
A combination of an accessible, high-quality product and a large marketing spend would be vital for companies looking to gain an edge during the festive season, Mr Findlater added.
Questioned about Apple's prospects this Christmas, the expert said there was "a good chance" they would maintain their stranglehold on the tech market, and would even threaten more established players.
