IT industry news: iPhone 5 'could have had a negative impact on businesses had it gone ahead'

Companies in the UK should be aware that the reported launch of Apple's iPhone 5 could have had a negative impact on their corporate networks had it gone ahead, according to Nigel Hawthorn, vice president of marketing EMEA at Blue Coat Systems.

"What we're seeing is that updates from various software vendors, be it Adobe, Apple, Microsoft, whoever, are taking [up] a really large part of corporate bandwidth," Mr Hawthorn said.

"With the announcement [of iPhone 5], it looks like we're going to be told that there's a new version of iOS, there's a new version of iTunes, and probably therefore a complete iPhone and iPad software update. Knowing Apple's history those are going to be pretty large," he said.

The expert went on to say the arrival of the new device "may impact on corporate networks", and "IT managers need to realise this and make sure that they don't find the network is overloaded with lots of people doing downloads".

His comments emerged as Apple launched a new iPhone 4S, which many commentators said resembled the previous version that has been on the market for about a year.
