Young people in the future may consider changing their names to escape a past of indiscretions online, according to Eric Schmidt, chief executive of Google.

"I mean we really have to think about these things as a society," he said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal. "I'm not even talking about the really terrible stuff, terrorism and access to evil things."

He went on to say that he didn't believe society understood what happened when everything was available, knowable and recorded by everyone at all times.

In other IT industry news, Sam Tilston, director of SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) at Idea Taxi, an online marketing agency, said the promotional potential for social media is huge.

The expert went on to say that social media will become a "very useful tool" as companies learn more about it and start to comprehend the impact it can have on public relations.
