IT industry news: Workers ‘taking too many risks with data’

08:41 13th June 2011

Employees are putting too much business information security at risk since they are given too much freedom when taking data away from the office, according to Steve Holford, marketing director at online services supplier, Fasthosts Internet.

"Too many workers are taking risks with work-related data and documents,” he said.

His comments emerged as research by Fasthosts Internet showed a worrying number of UK office workers admit to putting work-related data at risk whilst working off-site.

The expert went on to say it is significant that most of those surveyed are "expected to determine their own method for transferring data off-site" as well as storing it.

"Particularly at home or when travelling, this can often lead to complacency and so a real risk to the business," he added.

Companies are being put "unnecessarily at risk" due to "a lot of inconsistency within workforces", he said.
