IT industry news: WiFi 'to make smartphone less dependent on mobile networks'

08:31 30th September 2010

IT industry developments have given rise to WiFi on mobile phones which in return will make owners of smartphones less  reliant on mobile networks, according to Dr Steve Smith, research director at Coda Research Consultancy.

The expert said smartphone users opting to use Wi-Fi over 3G (third-generation) "won't be dependent upon the operators for giving them decent coverage and decent speed".

"Traffic offloading is really important, and we will see a lot more traffic offloading going on," he said.

Dr Smith went on to say that the likes of iPhone owners will get "much faster speeds" by using Wi-Fi at home or in hot spots.

He also said that LTE (Long Term Evolution), the beyond-3G mobile broadband standard, can also speed up mobile data transmission significantly.

His remarks emerged as mobile internet and digital entertainment market intelligence company In-Stat forecast earlier this week that more than one billion Wi-Fi chipsets will be shipped annually by 2012.
