Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, provides more accessible solutions than the traditional telephony systems, according to David Cargill, a council member of the Internet Telephony Service Providers' Association.
"I wouldn't necessarily say it's superior - it's just more accessible," he said.
The expert explained that before businesses would be able to access some of the features VoIP provides like bandwidth to put one call down it or 20 calls down it. "But they're pretty expensive," he adds.
"So, a small company if they want to download their own free Asterisk and get into the game, you can get pretty sophisticated functionality - which previously would have cost an arm and a leg. A lot of the functions we deliver are pretty similar to the old functions, just a lot, lot cheaper," he said.
Separately, businesses adopting unified communications are set to provide a boost for the VoIP equipment market in the long run, according to Diane Myers, directing analyst, service provider VoIP and IMS (Internet protocol Multimedia Subsystem) at Infonetics Research.
