More users are increasingly demanding personal devices like tablets and smartphones to be accessible in the office, according to Spencer Parker, group product manager at Websense, a firm that offers unified web, data and email content security.
The expert said the divide between personal and work has been blurred recently with such devices and that IT departments of organisations needed to perform "a balancing act".
"Maybe that [person] needs to get his work done, and the only way of doing it is on their phone, because [the company is] not providing the phone to do it," he said.
"The IT department then has a balancing act; they're losing access to that data because they're putting it onto a device they no longer own or control – is that an accessible risk?" he added.
He said the proliferation of personal devices escapes just the realm of phones and that devices like the iPad have become widely popular.
"The proliferation of those devices has just gone ballistic," he explained.
His comments emerged as Kaspersky Lab said recently that it believes the total volume of mobile malware in 2011 will be double that of last year.
