IT users must create complicated passwords to safeguard personal data online, according to Simon Heron, internet security analyst at Redscan, an IT security services firm.
His warning comes as several high profile web and social media sites including Twitter, Yahoo and LinkedIn have recently instructed users to change their passwords following a high impact hack on online media company and blog network Gawker Media.
"Unfortunately people often have simple passwords, and they then use the same simple password across multiple accounts. Once you've got that simple password you've got the crown jewels – [-] all their accounts that they're using that for," Mr Heron said.
The expert suggested users often don't take passwords seriously enough, but stressed that "they have got to start thinking of strategies to make more complicated passwords" in order to outfox hackers.
Using combinations of letters and a page number from a favourite book to create passwords which are complicated but can be traced back to a personal reference point if forgotten, Mr Heron went on to say.
