IT industry news: Users of smartphones 'aren't security savvy'

07:44 6th June 2011

Smartphone users aren't as technologically savvy when it comes to security as those with personal computers because they don't realise the value of the information their devices hold, which in many cases is similar a personal computer, according to Con Mallon, director of regional product marketing at consumer online protection brand, Norton.

"People don't see it in that context; they don't see it as a computer," he said.

"They still see it as a phone and [are] not really all that savvy to the climate for security," Mr Mallon added.

Educating people that cybercriminals could now target their phone as well as their PC to obtain personal information is a "massive job", the expert explained.

He went on to say that "by and large more PCs have some form of security software running on them, by and large the majority of mobiles do not," making it "much easier" to get information from phones.

His comments emerged as Reuters reported Neil Rimer, co-founder of Index Ventures, said at the Reuters Global Technology Summit that "the mobile security market will one day be bigger than that of computers."
