IT industry news: Users 'need to be aware of geolocation software risks'

06:51 1st February 2011

Users must be more aware of the dangers posed by geolocation software when publishing personal information on social networks, despite the multiple benefits platforms like Foursquare offer, according to Tony Neate, managing director of Get Safe Online.

"With geolocation software, as long as people understand exactly what they're doing, that they're giving people the exact location where they are - and not always people that they know - then that's fine," he said.

Mr Neate went on to say that there are still many social networking site users who are not aware of the risks of exposing their personal and financial data on such websites.

Users need to fully grasp the implications of using geolocation in order to make "an informed choice", the expert said.

Recently, DC Derek Graham of the Lothian and Borders Child Protection Internet Investigation Unit issued a warning to citizens about disclosing details online following the case of a 26-year-old designer who was cyber-stalked via Foursquare.
