Upgrading a computer is more inexpensive than replacing it completely and it can also help consumers increase the power of their equipment, according to Roddy McLean, marketing director at memory upgrade website Crucial.com.
"Upgrading your computer is definitely easier on the purse strings than buying a brand new one," Mr McLean said.
"It's hard to quantify how much a memory upgrade will benefit a sluggish machine as every computer is different," he added.
But the expert went on to say that an upgrade can increase a PC's performance. He said users would even notice the difference in speed when simply switching the equipment on.
His comments emerged as PC unit growth has slowed and must once again rely on businesses to drive it, Gartner said earlier this month.
The research revealed this is due to consumers from mature markets maintaining a tight rein on their spending in response to continuing economic uncertainty.
