IT industry news: Updating anti-virus software 'is key'

06:44 28th July 2011

Updating your anti-virus software constantly and consistently is key to provide security to IT systems, according to Graham Ahearne, EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) technical product manager at Symantec.

"It's not unusual for many security vendors to add in excess of 20,000 new signatures to their anti-virus definitions every day," Mr Ahearne said.

The expert went on to say even those who have their definitions as users out of date by a day or even a couple of hours, risks being targeted by malicious software that constantly appears on the internet.

"One of the key things is that traditional anti-virus and its reactive nature of protection is becoming less and less exclusively capable of protecting machines. Some new strategies are needed," he said

"The amount of malware that we see today is exploding all the time – the numbers continue to increase," he added.

In other IT industry news, mobile devices like the Apple's iPhone or Google's Android will be increasingly exposed to more complex and common cyber attacks, experts have warned.
