An IT expert has claimed that "pretty much all companies" stand to benefit from a unified storage solution, which can make handling many different types of data easier and more affordable.
Bob Plumridge, chairman of the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) Europe, said businesses are increasingly required to manage a large number of different files and applications on a daily basis.
Unified storage - a concept that may be familiar to people who have completed IT training - provides a single platform from which a myriad of applications can be run.
"It doesn't matter if you're storing Oracle databases, online transactional systems, Word documents or PowerPoint files or email systems - all of that data resides on one storage platform," Mr Plumridge explained.
He added that even relatively small firms could benefit from unified storage due to the lower capital expenditure it allows.
Companies that adopt the system will typically have to make "one purchasing decision, rather than three or four", the expert stated.
The SNIA Europe recently unveiled a set of standardised power efficiency ratings for storage products in an attempt to make devices more environmentally-friendly.
