IT industry news: UK 'lagging behind mobile broadband revolution'

08:40 13th June 2011

The UK is "dragging its heels" when it comes to mobile broadband services, according to Chris Marling, editor of Broadband Genie.

"We are dragging our heels terrible in the UK when it comes to mobile broadband. In the US and some parts of Europe, 4G mobile broadband with speeds averaging more than 10Mb is already a reality - we are lucky to average 1Mb here," he said.

He also said a lack of superfast broadband isn't the main obstacle for many people who work remotely but rather managers who don't trust this set up and a failure of many companies to advance with the times.

"Normally, the issue is trust - if a boss can't see his staff he can't be sure they're working. It's sad but true and is a viscous circle," Mr Marling added.

In related IT industry news, Michael Phillips of broadbandchoices.co.uk has said broadband customers whose speeds are less fast than the estimate they were sold should be able to change their internet service provider (ISP) without paying a fee.
