IT industry news: UK 'is lagging behind as a digital economy'

06:28 22nd February 2011

The UK is lagging behind other countries when it comes to being a leader in the digital economy, despite being ahead of the game in other areas, according to Denis McCauley, director of global technology research at economic and business research Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU).

"There is broad recognition that the UK lags behind other nations in key areas of digital development, such as NGN [next-generation network] rollout and service adoption," he said.

His assessment, he said, comes despite many policymakers and other experts and leaders in business and industry being proud about the British developments in some aspects of the digital economy.

But in his view, the UK is behind many other nations because it has dedicated too much time on the direction it should take when pursuing its digital economy strategy.

Separately, the president of the FTTH (fibre-to-the-home) Council Europe, Chris Holden, said earlier this month that economies like the UK, alongside Germany and Spain, need to get up to speed regarding the growth of FTTH networks.
