07:08 11th October 2010

Despite the IT industry developments that allowed Twitter to be conceived, the micro-blogging site is still aimed at a niche market, according to Tom Smith, managing director of Global Web Index.

"Microblogging is still extremely niche, despite all the hype about Twitter," he said.

"If we look at the last 12 months in Europe as we can see, we often think of the web moving extremely quickly but actually the market now is extremely mature. Twitter appeals to a certain audience. [Throughout Europe] Microblogging is relatively niche, regardless of market," he added.

The expert was speaking at the online branding and social media workshop, hosted by the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) in London last month.

In other IT industry news, on average, for French news websites, Facebook accounts for more than one visit out of 100; 13 times greater than Twitter, according to a survey by AT Internet released last month.

The average share of Facebook as a referrer was 1.3 per cent from the 6th to the 12th September 2010 compared to 0.1 per cent for Twitter, the survey found.
