IT industry news: Twitter 'must move with the times'

06:23 15th February 2011

Twitter, the micro-blogging website, should keep up with the rapidly evolving technologies of the online world if it wants to remain relevant, according to Andrew Girdwood, head of strategy at digital marketing agency bigmouthmedia.

"It will need to evolve because, online, if you don't evolve, you're dead," he said of Twitter.

He said there are signs that the site is making efforts to keep up to date. He said the 'suggestions for you' feature, which lets people find accounts that match their interests, is a good example of those efforts.

"We're seeing it recommending people to follow to you, and that's actually good, because that keeps the use of Twitter going," he said.

The expert went on to say that this new feature will help keep the site popular because it will allow new users to interact with veteran users in a much faster and efficient way.

His comments emerged as data published last month by Experian Simmons DataStream showed visits to Twitter.com have fallen during the past 12 months by 14 per cent.
