Twitter is not just a trend that is popular now and will drop out of favour in the future, it has been claimed.
Andrew Girdwood, media innovations director at the bigmouthmedia digital agency, said that the real-time information network is "here to stay".
He added that the website has established itself as a micro-blogging platform and its business model has seen, and will continue to see, success.
"You've got the celebrities who are using Twitter, so you've got the power of fame as a reason to use Twitter. And it's not just that it's baked into our culture, it's baked into our technology," Mr Girdwood noted.
"Look at all those blogs that have 'tweet this' buttons, all those websites where you can use a Twitter ID to sign up to and access that site - Twitter is firmly entrenched in that."
The comments come days after the website celebrated its fifth birthday, on March 21st.
