The popularity of the microblogging service Twitter outside the US market has really gained track, according to Andrew Girdwood, head of strategy at digital marketing agency bigmouthmedia.
"Twitter really has taken off overseas," Mr Girdwood said. The use of the microblogging site is a topic that could be taught in IT training.
He said that the adoption by countries outside the US has really given the business a major boost. "If you look at the 20 billionth tweet, it's not in English," he said.
He went on to identify Twitter's role in Iran's disputed presidential elections as evidence of international take up.
"That's where the speed of Twitter and the ease of access to Twitter just becomes so important," Mr Girdwood said.
According to a report in the Washington Times, updates, photos and videos shown by Twitter helped provide a real picture of the demonstrations that followed the Iranian presidential elections.
