IT industry news: Training courses could reduce data breach costs

Britain's businesses could start turning to computer training courses as they look to protect themselves against the very real threat of data breaches.

According to the latest annual study into the problem carried out by the Ponemon Institute, the average data breach now costs British companies around £1.9 million.

This represents a 13 per cent rise on the cost of a data breach recorded back in 2009, with the chairman of the institute, Larry Ponemon suggesting that both public and private sector organisations would be well-advised to invest in protective measures, whether it be by upgrading their firewalls or ensuring staff have the IT training they need to keep sensitive information secure.

"Confronted with both malicious and non-malicious threats from inside and outside the organisation, companies must proactively implement policies and technologies to mitigate the risk of costly breaches," he said.

Notably, the study also found that around three in ten data breaches are now the result of employee negligence.

Meanwhile, Google has been hit by a record fine from the French data privacy regulator CNIL after being found guilty of breaching privacy laws while working on its Street View mapping service.
