The number of teenagers addicted to products from the IT industry is "very low", according to professor Mark Griffiths, director of the International Gaming Research Unit at Nottingham Trent University.
He said, however: "If the psychological and behaviour reward systems are there, and obviously interactive technology is one of these things that gives a lot of rewards, my own research tends to show that yes, these things can be addictive."
According to his own research, technology can turn into an addiction in the same way other traditional addictions can because it offers rewards to people.
His remarks emerged after a study published in the Archives of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine revealed that teenagers who are pathological users of the internet are 2.5 times more likely to suffer from depression.
But Professor Griffiths added that there are relatively few true addicts, which is good news for parents. But he also said parents should take responsibility for what their children do.
