IT industry news: Super-fast broadband 'could bust boost online retail'

Implementing super-fast broadband in Britain could turn the internet into a major retail platform for UK companies, according to Jonathan Bowers, communications director of UKFast.

"A combination of super-fast broadband and speed of delivery from businesses is definitely going to make a big difference," Mr Bowers said.

He said a fast internet connection was crucial but it was even more important for consumers to be able to access websites that are easy and quick to navigate.

Only then will they be enticed to come back, he said.

The expert went on to say that the blend of both of these issues could "probably make the internet the biggest retail platform in the UK".

His comments emerged as results by Virgin Media's annual report suggested a growing need for super-fast broadband as 4.8 million people were using the company's cable broadband service by the end of last year.
