IT industry news: Students with online skills 'more likely to get a job'

08:28 21st July 2011

Students active on the internet have higher possibilities of obtaining a job after graduating from university, according to Lizzie Fane, founder of ThirdYearAbroad.com.

She said social media skills and a large network of contacts would make landing a graduate role easier.

"While getting a foot on the traditional career ladder is increasingly competitive, graduates already have the required skills for new job sectors which are opening up," she said.

"If students make an effort to have a significant online presence - via a blog, YouTube or Twitter accounts - and a large network of friends and followers before they leave university, they will find it much easier to get a job in whichever country they want to work," he added.

Her comments emerged as research by IMRG and eDigitalResearch revealed 63 per cent of online businesses increased staff levels over the past year alone.

The survey also showed 74 per cent of e-commerce departments and businesses have increased their turnover since last year.
