IT industry news: Strong evidence of illegal filesharing 'is needed'

06:50 3rd September 2010

Sound evidence of online copyright infringement is needed before allegations are made against internet users, according to Dr Damian Tambini, member of the Communications Consumer Panel and senior lecturer at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

He said there needs to be "cogent evidence when copyright infringement reports are made".

Informing consumers of infringements should be "clear, unthreatening and non-partisan" and that consumers must "have the opportunity to appeal" against such a notification, Dr Tambini added.

The expert went on to say that consumers should be given an independent representative to assist them with the appeals process and general training on the legal alternatives to illegal filesharing.

In other IT industry news, digital rights campaigning group the Open Rights Group has said Ofcom's draft Digital Economy Act code of practice is falling behind schedule because of "glaring questions" about the methods and standards of evidence that will be used to define copyright infringement.
