IT industry news: Specific companies 'targeted by cyber criminals'

11:06 10th May 2011

Online criminals are gradually focusing their attacks to specific companies, according to Con Mallon, director of regional product marketing at online protection brand, Norton.

"The bad guys are going after more targeted-type activity," he said, referring to this new trend in the IT industry.

He said this more targeted approach not only applies to enterprises but also to individuals.

"We all really now need to be very aware of that and ever more sensitive to people coming after us," the expert went onto say.

His comments follow Hydraq attacks and the Stuxnet outbreak of last year, which serve as an example of cyber criminals aiming for individuals in IT businesses and critical infrastructure respectively.

Separately, a group of hackers has expressed its plans to launch a series of cyber attacks against Sony in retaliation for its handling of the PlayStation Network breach, CNET exclusively reported last week.
