IT sector developments have allowed social networks to offer "huge potential" for the gaming industry, according to Clive Hawkswood, the Remote Gambling Association's chief executive.
"Poker is very much a social form of gambling with players taking each other on rather than competing against the house," Mr Hawkswood said.
He went on to say that poker operators provide interactive chat rooms alongside the games while they are in progress so that players can chat among themselves.
The expert said: "There are signs that variations on this are becoming increasingly popular in some other forms of online gambling, such as bingo."
He said this proved that social networks and online gambling fit well together.
Separately, the industry is growing by five per cent annually, according to Poker Scout, an online poker traffic monitoring website.
The most notable gains were seen by Merge Gaming Network, which saw traffic rise 78 per cent year-on-year, the company said.
