Developments in the IT industry have contributed to the rise of social networks but these may also have adverse effects on young people as they contribute towards depression in teenagers, according to Lucie Russell, director of campaigns, policy and participation at YoungMinds.
"Cyber-bullying, which can lead to depression and other mental health problems, is an increasing phenomenon. There's definitely a role for schools in raising awareness of this problem, especially as a lot of cyberbullying originates from relationships made at school," she said.
The expert was careful to highlight the use of social networks is just one of many aspects that may trigger depression in youngsters.
Ms Russell went on to say that people using social networks may feel very isolated if the experiences isn't mixed with real interaction with their peers.
Though she also said that social networks can also have positive effects. "Social networking sites such as Facebook are a key part of a lot of young people's lives and they also offer many positives," she said.
