IT industry news: Social networking sites 'needed for fluid society'

06:48 12th October 2010

The use of social networks contributes to a "fluid society", according to Anders Sandberg, research fellow at Oxford University's Future of Humanity Institute (FHI).

"A fluid, global society might be much better off having a lot of weak ties and a few strong ones. For that you actually need Facebook, or something like it," Mr Sandberg said.

In other IT industry news, in a speech given by Google CEO Dr Eric Schmidt at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in San Francisco last month, he said the giant search engine was "building an augmented version of humanity" in which computers will help humanity to do things such as navigate and make decisions on a frequent basis.

Reacting to the speech, Mr Sandberg said the impact of Google has been of great good because it has been able to increase people's ability to find and use information, and often in a creative and personal way.

While expressing the positive impact of information access and social networking, he warned people "we need to keep track of companies having this kind of technology".
