IT industry news: Social media 'promoted in the workplace'

07:18 31st May 2011

IT industry developments have led employers to promote the use of social media in the workplace despite not enough evidence being available on its impact to employees' efficiency, according to Dominique Busso, CEO of the website publisher NetMediaEurope.

"It is very early to measure the impact of social media on productivity," he said.

"Nevertheless, social media seems to be vividly encouraged to be used at corporate level," Mr Busso added.

The experto also said that "social media policy comes from the top management" in one-third of UK companies, with a higher proportion of companies in countries like Italy and Spain doing the same.

However, for many French companies, "the decision of social media use is "bottom up'" as employees "lead the way," he explained.

His comments emerged as nearly half of UK businesses have banned Facebook in the workplace over the last year, according to research published earlier this month by LEWIS Communications.
