Social media marketing still has a lot of room to grow over the next few years, according to Dan Oliver, editor-in-chief at .net magazine.
"At the moment there's little best practice in this area, which means most companies and social media specialists are still in a period of experimentation," he said.
Any business with an online presence would "be crazy to ignore digital marketing", Mr Oliver said.
His remarks emerged as Bigmouthmedia's 2011 Travel Report revealed that social media spending is overtaking direct email marketing.
According to their report, the travel sector's enthusiasm for digital marketing is set to continue in the face of extremely challenging trading conditions.
Meanwhile, smart phone-enabled enthusiasm for mobile grows, with 28 per cent planning to invest in apps development and 22 per cent looking to build mobile sites over the course of the next year.
