Businesses can use social media to have a clear idea of how effective their marketing strategies are, according to Tim Gibbon, director at communications consultancy Elemental.

"Social media platforms allow the global reach of brands to create awareness and sell products and services quicker and more cost-effectively than before," Mr Gibbon said.

The expert went on to say that by joining up communications and marketing, businesses could have a better idea of whether their interaction with clients was paying off.

"They can unify communications and marketing by creating seamless activity across all of their channels and can be a more measurable way to determine the success of their online communications if they select their metrics and manage their analysis efficiently," he added.

His comments emerged as an international survey by Proskauer's International Labor & Employment Group revealed 76 per cent of companies use social networking for business.

Of the businesses that use social networking for business, 70 percent only started doing so in the last three years, the survey also showed.
