Social networks could help businesses have a more open and interactive conversation with their customers regarding their products and services, according to Stephen Haines, commercial director of Facebook's UK operations.
Mr Haines said that, in the future, marketing strategies will be centered around "a two-way dialogue" between companies and potential clients.
"We're just starting to touch on this [idea of] 'social by design', where customers like yourself actually ask us how to take a step back from advertising and actually reflect the users with a product's design," he told delegates at the Technology For Marketing & Advertising event at London's Earls Court earlier this month.
"Brands now are actually becoming a two-way dialogue for users; gone are the days when advertisers would just push a message," he said.
He went on to say that companies using social networks like Facebook should look at advertising in a completely new light and should disregard many of the practices that have been used in the past.
