IT industry news: Social gaming 'has huge potential for revenue'

Developments in the IT industry have allowed the creation of social gaming and it offers a good source of revenue, according to Rachel Hawkes, co-founder and editor of the Social Media Portal (SMP).

She said social games like Farmville are "very good at getting non-spenders to part with a few pounds here and there."
"The revenue potential in social gaming is made obvious by the recent acquisition of Slide by Google and Playdom by Disney," she said.

Online social games have seen a recent surge in popularity. Farmville is currently the most popular social media game with over 62 million active monthly users.

FrontierVille, also created by Zynga, is climbing the charts with over 33 million active monthly users.

The expert also pointed out that there are reports of a big spender in the UK, called a 'Whale' in the social gaming arena, parting with about £9,000 worth of cash.

Separately, social networking site Facebook recently launched Facebook Places, an online application which allows users to 'check-in' and share their current location.
