Brands can find huge potential by marketing through social games and this practice is set to become popular, according to Tom Chapman, social media strategist at Headstream.

"Social games present marketers with an opportunity to achieve brand awareness amongst a huge audience of engaged players," Mr Chapman said.

He suggested that "coupling the right brand with the right game is a great way of adding value to the social game experience,"  and in the right circumstances could be "a great way of blending offline and online activity" to further engage fans.

Marketing via social games "will become more popular as recognisable brands try it out and achieve success", he added.

His comments followed the news that rap artist Dr Dre is partnering with games developer Zynga to use the Facebook and iPhone game Mafia Wars to promote his forthcoming album Detox.

This is the first in-game music partnership for Zynga, which is one of the leading social game developers in the market today, responsible for such other hit games as FarmVille, FrontierVille and the newly released CityVille.
