Sales of smartphones are set to outsell those of PCs and laptops combined by 2012, according to Rachel Arthur, associate marketing editor at WGSN (Worth Global Style Network), an online fashion industry resource of trend and research analysis.
She also said that location marketing couldn't be possible if people didn't own a mobile device, a now common technological development in the IT industry.
"iPhones, Androids – more and more of them coming out all the time and they are going to be incredibly useful for location services but also things like vouchers as well, which will allow people to target people more specifically," Ms Arthur said.
Ms Arthur went on to say that using location marketing could also be cost effective. She said companies don't really need to invest a lot of cash in a creating an app. However, she said, businesses need to make sure that their website works on these phones.
