The growth of smartphones and mobile web use is likely to change people's perception of the internet, according to Matt McAlister, the director of digital strategy at Guardian Media Group.
The use of smartphones "is going to change the way people behave - it is going to change their expectations of what the internet does for them", Mr McAlister said at a Leeds Community News Hub event.
"Because this is a different device, a different engagement model with your readers," Mr McAlister believes this means having a different view of what makes good web content.
He also said the trend was shifting away from building extraordinary websites to building amazing mobile apps.
Global smartphone shipments will eclipse PC shipments in 2012, with more than 400 million smartphones expected to be shipped that year to avoid repetition], compared to less than 200 million last year, according to Morgan Stanley's Mary Meeker.
