IT industry news: Smartphones 'boost mobile broadband'

06:39 5th April 2011

The popularity of smartphones has increased the use of mobile broadband, according to Edd Dawson, editor of broadband.co.uk, the independent broadband advice website.

Despite broadband still relying heavily on fixed lines, mobile phones with internet-enable features has boosted the use of mobile broadband, the expert said.

Consumers are "using the internet on their phone as they're going along" thanks to devices like the iPhone and Android-powered phones, he said.

"That's where I think a lot of the growth has come in the past year or so," Mr Dawson said.

The expert went on to say that while fixed-line is still the "dominant form" of broadband due to its speed and reliability, mobile's flexibility is obviously "much better".

His comments emerged as Microsoft Tag, a new kind of mobile phone bar code, published an infographic that showed that by 2014 mobile internet usage should overtake desktop internet usage.
