IT industry news: Smartphones 'allow companies to be available all the time'

07:45 9th September 2010

IT industry developments in smartphones have allowed companies to be available to their customers all the time, according to Heather Mclean, editor and founder of smartgorillas.com.

Smartphones enable businesses "to always be available to their customers and improve customer relationship management so they can manage their business much better," Ms Mclean said.

The expert also said that smartphone technology was in its infancy, and despite having good qualities, the drawbacks are also very apparent.

"There are disadvantages in using smartphones", she added. The expert said the devices break quite easily and do not seem to be "as reliable and durable" as needed. She said this is holding back the amount of people who relied on them.

However, in the future "they will change significantly and get much stronger and tougher", she said.

Around half (48 per cent) of UK small businesses are using smartphones for email or to use the web for business purposes, according to research released by the Quarterly Survey of Small Business in Britain by The Open University Business School, Barclays and ACCA.
