IT industry news: Smartphone users 'must take security seriously'

20:12 29th June 2011

Owners of mobile devices, like smartphones and tablet computers, should really take security seriously, according Con Mallon, director of regional product marketing at online protection brand, Norton.
The public must "basically start to take security seriously on their smartphones and on tablets", he said.

"That is one of the big education elements that I think you're really going to start to see go out during the course of this year," he added.

According to the expert, mobile attacks are "still relatively small in the absolute numbers," but "we definitely see some of the enablers and drivers now being present in that place".

He said money will be a key incentive for mobile devices to become a mainstream target for cyber criminals.

His comments emerged as there are currently less than one in 20 smartphones and tablets have third party security software installed in them, according to Juniper Research forecast.
