Internet data roaming charges leave two in three holidaymakers out of pocket, according to research led by the Carphone Warehouse.
The study revealed 79 per cent of smartphone users expect to access the internet from their mobile device this summer whilst abroad, the company said in a press release. While only 6 per cent are aware of the correct cost per megabyte (MB) when accessing the internet from a mobile phone outside the UK.
The figures also revealed that nearly two thirds (62%) of smartphone users have been burnt by a large mobile phone bill following a trip abroad.
“We’ve seen a real increase in smartphone users over the past year. Roughly 85 per cent of handsets sold with a postpay connection at The Carphone Warehouse in 2010-2011 were smartphones, with penetration in the rest of our other European markets increasing all the time,” said Matt Stringer, UK MD from The Carphone Warehouse.
He went on to say that even though adoption is high, the findings highlight the potentially high costs associated with using smartphones abroad.
