Testing cloud computing gradually may be a good way for small businesses to try out the new technology if they are looking to keep costs down, according to Andy Horn, general manager at Easynet Connect.
The expert said businesses should avoud "a big-bang approach to moving to the cloud" and suggested firms "try before they buy".
"For companies that are mindful of controlling their costs we would recommend that they trial small projects in a cloud-based environment and prove that the concept meets their needs before moving their business critical applications to the cloud," he said.
Mr Horn said cloud computing also offers a route for adding in new 'transformational' applications over and above existing legacy systems.
As an example he cited enhanced customer relationship management tools. He said they can help businesses improve their service level when dealing with clients.
These services, he added, "are available in the cloud on a pay-as-you-go basis, making costs transparent and enabling businesses to dip their toe in and try before they buy".
His comments emerged as a survey by Easynet Connect revealed 34 per cent stated that they have no desire to move their applications into the cloud; an increase of seven per cent based on the results from 2010.
