IT industry news: 'Slack regulation is partly to blame for data breaches'

09:12 5th August 2010

Companies have failed to put measures in place to protect their information as a result of limited cash, slack regulation and other worries, according to Alexei Lesnykh, business development manager for endpoint data leak prevention software solutions provider DeviceLock.

"Until very recently, the compliance pressure regarding data breach reporting was not so high," he said. But Mr Lesnykh added that organisations both inside and outside the IT industry can be ordered to pay up to £500,000 as a fine for serious breaches of the Data Protection Act by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).

The expert added that those businesses outside [[non- ** delete]] data security sensitive industries do not take steps to prevent breaches as they do not feel obliged to comply with regulation and have not really suffered from data leaks.

Mr Lesnykh added that, while many chief information officers are aware of all the risks data breaches present enterprises, but that they lack the resources to employ the necessary preventative solutions.

In other IT industry news, according to recent survey results from DeviceLock, one in three IT decision makers is still failing to deploy any form of data leak prevention.
