IT industry news: 'Sharp divides' in broadband speeds

07:39 4th November 2010

There are sharp divides in broadband speeds in different areas of the UK, according to Edd Dawson, editor of broadband.co.uk.

The expert said the UK was still lagging behind other countries when it came to broadband speeds in some areas.

"As Virgin Media have their own dedicated network and they don't allow any other providers to use the service then, in the short-term in most areas, no other provider is going to be able to come close to them," he said.

Mr Dawson illustrated the differences in speed connections for broadband customers in the UK: "In an area where Virgin will be offering 100Mb then you have a world class broadband service, outside of areas such as these you'll still be lagging behind."

His comments emerged as Virgin Media recently announced the rollout timetable of its 100Mb broadband service.

Over 12.7 million homes will get the new 100Mb service and it will be nearly 20 times the average UK speed, the company claimed.
