Security data is a costly and complicated process, according to Dr. Akif Khan, director of products and services for CyberSource, an online payment and fraud management service company.
"The act of securing data within an organisation is a costly and complicated undertaking and many online retailers prefer to engage a certified third party to help reduce this burden and move all customer payment data off-site," he said.
The expert went on to say that payment security is related to capturing, storaging and transmitting sensitive data. The first step to securing payment data, he argues, is for businesses to have a clear understanding of where in an organisation's systems customer data sits and from which points it can be accessed.
In other related news, IT industry developments have allowed the creation of contactless payment methods and these are set to be used for small transactions, according to Neil Munroe, spokesman for Equifax.
Mr Munroe said mobile payment methods will encourage consumers to buy more and that they won't bring down the use of credit cards.
