IT industry news: Science qualifications 'needed in video games career'

10:13 28th January 2011

Obtaining a qualification in maths and science helps those who want to get into the global video games industry, according to Phil Elliott, managing editor of GamesIndustry.biz.

"One thing is clear - there's a real need for stronger education in the UK when it comes to the maths and sciences," he confirmed.

His comments emerged as Tim Loughton, parliamentary under-secretary of state for children, emphasised the government's "determination to ensure that all children can benefit from technology and the huge opportunities it brings".

Mr Elliot said many companies often can't find the right people with the relevant qualifications in maths or computer science.

He said those subjects might be less popular at GCSE and A-level but they do make an important difference when making video games.

The expert went on to say that targeted training for those in the games industry might help them develop but the speed at which the IT industry moves means attending specialist courses may not always be beneficial.
